"Save the litres,
get fitter and healthier,
ride a bike from
The Cyclery"
Ask cycling mainstay Grant Hannam about business, and he'll tell you it's equal to two life sentences without time off for good behaviour. After 34 years in the cycling industry, the cogs are still turning and it's business as usual, the racing veteran says.
The Cyclery has moved three times during those 34 years, from number 62 to 96 and 106 Stafford St and Mr Hannam was there from the start when his father introduced the family to the world of mountain and road cycling.
"I started off from scratch in conjunction with my father," he said. Mr Hannam said being in business was more than just a nine-to-five job. "If you haven't got passion, then you won't keep up."
Recession had recently affected business, but cycling was a way of beating it, he said. "We're having to be careful with costs but some people see this as a way around recession. "It requires an attitude."
A lot of people had been surprised at the difference in taking a bicycle out to a shop rather than the car. "People have taken that shift around and been taken aback by the amount of gas they save. "Cycling not only benefits the physical but mental health as your mind gets a workout at the same time."
Timaru's market was a bit of a mixture, Mr Hannam said. "It's a strong competitive cycling community."
The Central Otago Rail Trail had been a contributing factor in attracting more people to cycling, Mr Hannam said. It was also encouraging that plans had been launched for a national cycling trail.
"Having seen things in Europe, they've got a long way to go still."
The Cyclery introduced electric bikes to the Timaru market in February.
